The Rules of Basketball

What is basketball? Basketball is a game played between two teams of five players each on a rectangular court, usually indoors. Each team tries to score by tossing the ball through the opponent's goal, an elevated horizontal hoop and net called a basket.

-          15 Players per team
-          5 players on the court
-          1 Point Guard
-          2 Shooting Guard
-          5 Center
-          3 Power Forward
-          3 Small Forward
-          The game start with a Tip Off
-          Once someone has possession on the ball they will have 24 seconds to shoot the ball
-          The goal basket is 10 feet long from the ground
-          In the NBA it is 94 feet Long * 50 feet Wide
-          Passing the Ball
-          Dribbling the ball
-          Shot made within the arc creates 2 points
-          Shot made outside the arc creates 3 points
-          Free throw shots creates 1 point
-          Failure to shoot ball within 24 seconds is shot clock violation
-          The game is played 4*12 minutes quarters in the NBA
-          The game is played 4*10 minutes quarters internationally
-          2*20 minutes halves(NCAA)
-          The highest score at the end within the time is the winner
-          If the score tied up at the end of regulation, overtime will be played to determine of the winner.

Violations are generally called when a player breaks the rules

Shot Clock Violation

If the player do not shot the ball within 24 seconds then this is called Shot Clock Violation

Double Dribble

If you dribble the ball and stop, then again start dribbling it is called as double dribble.

Travelling

If the player took steps without dribbling, then it is called as Travelling violation

Three in the Key

If a player stay on the key more than 3 seconds, then this is called as “Three in the Key” violation.

Charging

A violation is to attacking player who is a defender.

Other Violations

5/8 Seconds Violations

After a basket, the offensive team has 5 or 8 seconds to get the ball over the midcourt (depending on the rules of your respective league)

Palming

A violation in which a player moves his hand under the ball and scoops it while dribbling.

Kicking

If the ball touches a player below the kneecap, the other team is awarded possession.

Goaltending

When a defensive player interferes illegally with a shot on the rim or on a downward path to the hoop the shot is assumed in and the offensive team receives the basket.

Basket Interference

Interfering with the basket rim during a shot.

Back Court Violation

Touching the ball in the backcourt after it has entered the frontcourt and was not last touched by the other team.

Personal Foul

Illegal contact with an opposing player.

-          If a attacking player makes contact with the defending player in his area that is called an offensive foul.

-          If the defending player makes a contact with the attacking player in his space then this is called Defensive foul.

-          2 Shots (Fouled inside the arc)(Foul in the act of shooting)

-          3 Shots (Fouled outside the arc) (Foul in the act of shooting)

-          On the point of shooting, if the shooter is fouled, the point they score counts and they will be rewarded one extra shot.

Flagrant Foul

One player made violent contact against another player, this results one free shot to the basket.

Technical Foul

Not personal or Flagrant Foul

This includes

-          Fighting

-          Unsportsmanlike conduct

-          Abuse towards referees

-          2 Technical Fouls = Ejected from Game

-          5 Team Fouls = Free Throws for every foul

-          5 (or 6) Individual Fouls = Fouled Out

Airball

A shot attempt that was off the mark and didn't touch the basket or the backboard

Alley-oop

A play where a teammate throws the ball high towards the basket and their teammate jumps up, catches the ball, and then slams it into the hoop.

Assist

When a player passes the ball to their teammate, which leads to a made basket.

Backboard

The rectangular piece of wood or fiberglass attached to the back of the basket.

Box Out

Positioning yourself between the basket and your opponent as a way to obtain a rebound.

Brick

A shot that bounces off the rim or backboard without going in.

Double-Double

A phrase meaning a player recorded two statistical figures in double digits (i.e. 10 points and 12 assists).

Double Dribble

When a player either dribbles the ball with two hands or stops dribbling all together and then begins again, this results in a loss of possession.

Fast Break

A play that starts with a defensive rebound that is quickly passed up towards mid court to an awaiting teammate. These plays often end with an easy basket as the opposing team isn't able to catch up to the scoring player.

Field Goal

A basket made during the game.

Free-Throw Line

The line that players shoot from after being fouled. They cannot be guarded while shooting from there, and each basket made is worth one point.

Jump Ball

Two opposing players jump for a basketball that was tossed into the air by a ref. Also away to award possession after two opposing players simultaneously gain possession of a ball.

The Paint

This is the area on a court that extends from the baseline under the basketball to the free-throw line. Referred to as the paint because it is often a different color from the rest of the court.

Screen

When an offensive player stands in the way of a defender to try and give his teammate an open shot.

Slam Dunk

Also known as a dunk, this is when a player close to the basket jumps up and throws the ball down into the hoop.

Swish

A shot that goes straight through the net without touching the rim or backboard, also known as nothing-but-net.

Three-Point Line

Also known as the 3-point arc. This is the strip along the outside of the offensive zone and any shot made from behind it is worth three points.

Traveling

When a player moves their feet without dribbling the basketball. This results in a loss of possession for their team.

Triple-Double

A phrase meaning a player recorded three statistical figures in double digits, often thought of as a great accomplishment (i.e. 10 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds).
